Aligner Foams: A Dentist’s Personal Review

I tested Sterasmile, Curaprox and Eversmile aligner foams myself. My observations below cover taste, foam and ease of use; they are personal product impressions, not a clinical trial or proof that one foam is best for every patient.

What I compared

I considered the labelled formulation, foam consistency, taste and applicator. Follow each product’s instructions, and ask your dentist whether an aligner cleaner is suitable for your appliance and sensitivities.

Sterasmile

Details: 50ml; fine foam; acidic taste; fluoride-free and peroxide-free formulation.

My experience: I found the foam fine and consistent, and it spread evenly over the aligners. The grid applicator helped me control the amount. I found the acidic taste noticeable.

Curaprox

Details: 40ml; larger bubbles; unpleasant taste; contains hydroxyapatite and is fluoride-free.

My experience: The foam was adequate but less consistent for me. I found the taste unpleasant, and the pump got stuck on several occasions. Hydroxyapatite is included in the formulation, but this personal review does not establish a clinical benefit from the foam.

Eversmile

Details: 50ml; medium-small bubbles; mint taste; contains peroxide and is fluoride-free.

My experience: I preferred the mint taste and found the foam consistent. The label lists peroxide. If peroxide products have irritated your mouth before, check the instructions and ask your dentist before use. Aligner foam is a cleaning product, not a substitute for a dental whitening treatment.

My personal preference

Eversmile was my personal favourite for taste and consistency. Sterasmile suited my preference for a fluoride-free, peroxide-free formula. Curaprox was less pleasant for me to use. These are my observations, so another user may reach a different conclusion.

Using an aligner foam sensibly

• Use only as directed on the product packaging.
• Rinse aligners thoroughly before wearing them.
• Stop if irritation occurs and seek advice if symptoms persist.
• Ask your dentist about cleaning during orthodontic treatment.

A peroxide-containing foam may be marketed with brightening benefits, but aligner cleaning should not be treated as equivalent to a supervised whitening treatment.
