Toothpaste RDA describes a laboratory measure of a toothpaste’s relative dentine abrasivity. A higher value generally indicates more abrasive potential, but RDA is only one part of how a toothpaste behaves in real life. Brushing pressure, brush type, frequency, formula and exposed root surfaces also matter.

Why RDA matters

Dentine is softer than enamel. People with gum recession, exposed roots, erosion or sensitivity may want to avoid unnecessarily abrasive products, particularly if they brush forcefully. Enamel and dentine wear cannot be judged from RDA alone, so do not treat a number as a universal safety guarantee.

How to read an RDA value

RDA values are reported on a scale, but product ranges and labels do not always provide a value. Broad categories can be useful for comparison, yet fixed cut-offs should not be treated as a personal prescription. Whitening and charcoal pastes may be more abrasive than some everyday formulas, while sensitivity products are often designed with comfort in mind.
