Aligner Foams: My Honest Review as a Dentist
As a dentist who not only recommends aligner care products but also trials them to better advise
my patients, I’ve had the opportunity to test three popular aligner cleaning foams: Sterasmile,
Curaprox, and Eversmile. Here’s my professional (and personal) take on how they perform.
Sterasmile
Volume: 50ml
Foam: Fine bubbles, thanks to a grid-style applicator
Taste: Acidic
Formulation: Fluoride-free, peroxide-free
My Experience:
Sterasmile dispenses a very fine, consistent foam which I found spread evenly over the aligners.
The grid applicator is a nice touch—it seems to help control how much product is used.
However, I did notice the acidic taste, which some patients may find unpleasant. On the plus
side, it’s gentle, making it a good option for those who prefer to avoid peroxide and fluoride.
Best suited for: Patients looking for a mild, fluoride- and peroxide-free cleaner.
Curaprox
Volume: 40ml
Foam: Larger bubbles
Taste: Unpleasant
Formulation: Contains hydroxyapatite, fluoride-free
My Experience:
Curaprox contains hydroxyapatite, which is a great ingredient for promoting enamel
remineralization—a big plus during orthodontic treatment. That said, the taste was quite poor,
and I found the pump applicator problematic; on several occasions, it would get stuck in the down position, making it frustrating to use. The foam itself was adequate but less consistent than
the others.
Best suited for: Patients who value enamel protection and can tolerate less pleasant flavour and
potential pump issues.
Eversmile
Volume: 50ml
Foam: Medium-small bubbles
Taste: Pleasant mint
Formulation: Contains peroxide, fluoride-free
My Experience:
Eversmile quickly became my favourite. The foam has a refreshing mint taste that stays fresh
even overnight. Its peroxide content not only cleans the aligners well but also contributes to a
subtle brightening of the teeth. The foam consistency was reliable, and it’s well-priced for the
quality. I would only caution its use in patients with high sensitivity to peroxide, though most
tolerate it very well.
Best suited for: Patients seeking thorough cleaning, fresh taste, and mild whitening benefits.
My Verdict
Product | Best For | What I Liked Most | What Could Be Better |
Sterasmile | Gentle care without fluoride or peroxide | Fine, even foam; gentle formulation | Acidic taste |
Curaprox | Enamel support with hydroxyapatite | Enamel remineralization benefits | Bad taste; faulty pump |
Eversmile | Effective cleaning + whitening | Pleasant mint taste; peroxide cleaning | Not suitable for peroxide- sensitive patients |
Final Thoughts
As both a clinician and someone who trialed these products personally, Eversmile stood out for
its balance of taste, effectiveness, and added whitening. Sterasmile is a good choice for patients
wanting a very gentle, fluoride- and peroxide-free option. Curaprox, while beneficial in theory
due to hydroxyapatite, fell short for me in terms of usability and taste.
Ultimately, aligner care is not one-size-fits-all. I always recommend discussing your individual
needs and sensitivities before choosing an aligner cleaner. A clean aligner means not just a
healthier mouth, but a more confident smile.
